Its a golden day when you can break out a gold shadow or polish and not look like you’re about to hit the dance floor. Gold isn’t as hard to wear as you may imagine, and because there are so many golds; rose gold, honey gold, white gold, there is one for everyone.

It doesn’t only have to be kept to the editorial or fashion pages, it is wearable… But I love gold, and used it on Claire a few years back. Beautiful naturally, she allowed me to flex my artistic wings using gold pigments on her eyes and lips, and matte black on her brows and inthe sockets of her cheeks!
With more than 15 years experience working with some of the biggest names in the Beauty Industry, most recently as an International Ambassador for Laura Mercier, it made sense to call upon the expertise of Makeup Artist and trainer, Katy Messer who works under the name Makeup by Katy, has shared some of her secrets with MAF on how to use Gold in the most flattering ways.
“A touch of gold can be a fantastic tweak to a simple daytime make-up to take it to the next level, be it for a night time glamorous look or just a little added sparkle. My tips for using gold around the eyes is firstly, always ensure you’ve thoroughly concealed to lighten any darkness and blend away any redness.
Use the different tones of gold to enhance your eye shade. Blue eyes can wear a warm, yellow based gold to make their eye colour look icier. A green/hazel eye looks richer with a bronze based gold. With all eye colours, ensure that you keep the lash line dark and defined and I’d always use a black mascara to create more of a contrast between the lashes and the whites of the eyes.
Keep the gold to the lid as opposed to up onto the brow bone. This keeps the shimmer in the right place and stops the look from being dated. Highlight under the brow to lift if you want to with a matte white or cream shadow and groom the brow.
For a quick simple way to use gold alone, take a sheer cream eye shadow all over the lid, a neutral skin tone through the crease and 2 coats of mascara onto top and bottom lashes. Stick to a neutral/pink tone on the cheeks and lips and maybe add a dab of the gold cream shadow onto your lower lip to tie it all together.”
And as always, take a look at some of the hottest golds around today!
